What to Expect When You Begin Training at USSD
United Studios of Self Defense has taught Kempo Karate across the United States since 1968. Our unique blend of classical training and modern application truly constitutes USSD as America's Self Defense Leader. The effectiveness of our Kempo system is delivered by pairing small, personalized, lessons with group classes—so every student gets focused coaching and a thriving community.
Our lineage: tradition with purpose
Kempo carries traditions that trace back to the birthplace of the martial arts— the Shaolin temple in China. Our mix of classical, practical, and tactical training carries on the character-building traditions of classical martial arts, e.g. stances, forms, and disciplined practice, while applying them to modern self defense situations. At USSD, we honor our roots while teaching skills that work in today’s world.
How USSD teaches: personal + group
- Personal lessons : This is where your journey starts. You’ll meet your instructor, talk about why you came in, and set clear goals. Personal lessons let us tailor training to your needs—pace, fitness level, learning style, and experience.

- Group classes: Group classes deliver a great workout and skill-building through stretching, fundamentals, partner drills, pad work, and practical self-defense—all inside a supportive community.

Arriving at the dojo: your first visit
- Wear: something comfortable you can move in (t-shirt/athletic pants).
 - Bring: a bottle of water.
 - We’ll handle the rest: your instructor will show you where to place your shoes, how we bow on and off the mat, and where to stand.
 - Student resources: after your first class, check out our quick guides on how to tie your belt and how to fold your uniform—small rituals that build discipline and pride.

Your first personal lesson: focused, welcoming, effective
Most new students begin with a personal class. Expect:
- A brief conversation about your goals (fitness, confidence, focus, self-defense).
 - An introduction to the training space, and the etiquette therein.
 - A few core strikes, blocks, and footwork patterns tailored to your level.
 - Clear next steps—how often to train, which classes to join, and what progress looks like.

Why this matters: Personal lessons ensure every student is seen and supported. You’ll leave knowing exactly what to practice and where you’re headed.
Your first group class: energy + community
In group training you’ll get:
- Warm-up & mobility: to move better and stay injury-resistant.
 - Fundamentals: crisp basics and combinations to build timing and power.
 - Partner drills & pad work: practical, supervised reps that make skills usable.
 - Self-defense applications: age-appropriate, scenario-aware training.
 - Community: encouragement, accountability, and friendships formed through shared effort.
