Tournaments at United Studios of Self Defense are some of the most well organized, highest attended, and well run tournaments in the martial arts. Participation in these tournaments has so many advantages, among them being a fantastic learning opportunity, a great spectator event, and a wonderful opportunity to create new friendships and strengthen bonds from students from other USSD locations.
Yes, tournaments can be intimidating, especially if you’ve never been to one. It is important to note that USSD tournament events are categorized by age and rank, so you will only be competing against students similar in age and rank to you. The intimidating nature of tournaments should not be an impediment to joining though. In the NFL, only one team wins the Super Bowl, but the other 31 don’t stay home the next season.
One of people’s favorite parts about USSD tournaments is the camaraderie they build with students from other dojos. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to meet and reconnect with students they don’t normally get the opportunity to interact with. We joke, “families that kick together, stick together.” We often see competitors after their event talking about the event with their fellow competitors, win or lose, loving every moment of it.
