Soke Richard Black, and Soke Jack Turner, will lead this unprecedented two-day event for USSD Students and Families. They will be joined by a special guest instructor— a monk from the Shaolin Temple in China.

Our Main Seminar is limited to students 12 years & up. Our Kids Seminar is open to students under 12 years.

Soke Black and Soke Turner will be joined by by fellow instructors Master Deric Terrell, Master Jose Rodriguez, Master Gary Flickenger, and Master Terri Martin— each of whom will train our students on topics ranging from joint locks and controlling the fight, to take downs and the real-world application of our Kempo techniques.

Soke Turner
9th Degree Black Belt

Soke Jack Turner is internationally recognized as one of the world’s premier Kempo artists. Alongside Soke Richard Black, he serves as one of the two Head Masters of United Studios of Self Defense, representing the highest level of mastery within the USSD system.

With decades of experience teaching, developing, and preserving the USSD system, Soke Turner is known for his deep understanding of Kempo principles and his ability to translate advanced concepts into practical application for students of all levels.

In this seminar, Soke Turner will share the core principles and training methods that have defined his decades-long career, with a special focus on Kempo stick fighting and weapon-based applications.

Master Black
9th Degree Black Belt

Master Black stands among the most elite masters within United Studios of Self Defense. Alongside Master Jack Turner, he serves as one of the two Head Masters responsible for the continued development and evolution of the USSD system.  

With over 50 years of training experience and more than 40 years of teaching, Master Black brings unmatched depth, wisdom, and real-world perspective to his instruction. He specializes in devastating lower-body techniques known as pillar attacks, as well as advanced knife-defense principles.

His teaching emphasizes recognizing, working within, and controlling all ranges of combat with precision, balance, and intent. While high kicks may look impressive, Master Black teaches the true essence of effective martial arts—efficiency, structure, timing, and decisive execution.  

This seminar will expose participants to exclusive, high-level concepts typically reserved for Chief Instructors, offering rare insight into the deeper layers of the USSD system and its practical application under pressure.

Master Terrell
6th Degree Black Belt

Master Terrell began his martial arts training at age 12. While stationed at Camp Pendleton during his final year in the Marine Corps, he discovered USSD and joined the Oceanside dojo— eventually becoming Chief Instructor.

Inspired by his faith in Christ, Master Terrell knows he has been given a special gift and he wants to share that gift  which is to teach life lessons through martial arts; that anyone can benefit from the character building Karate has to offer.

A leader among USSD instructors, he also serves in his church’s American Sign Language (ASL) ministry as an Interpreter. He also enjoys time in the ocean with his Sea-Doo.

Master Deric Terrell

Master Flickinger
6th Degree Black Belt

Master Gary Flickinger is a 6th Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate with additional black belts in Jujitsu and Judo, along with a background in wrestling. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from San Jose State University.

Drawing from his diverse martial arts background, Master Flickinger emphasizes practical application, balance, and control. His instruction integrates striking and grappling concepts, helping students develop adaptable skills and a well-rounded understanding of self-defense.

Master Rodriguez
6th Degree Black Belt

As one of USSD’s most dynamic senior Masters and a key leader within the organization, Master Jose Rodriguez delivers an electrifying training experience focused on taking control of the fight from the very first exchange. Known for consistently training against larger opponents, he specializes in neutralizing size and strength advantages through precision, timing, and intelligent strategy.

His approach emphasizes structure, pressure management, and decisive execution—equipping students with the confidence and control required to perform at a high level under real resistance. This session is designed to elevate not only technical ability, but also leadership presence and composure under pressure.

Master Jose Rodriguez

Master Martin
5th Degree Black Belt

Master Terri Martin has been active in the United Studios of Self Defense community for over 30 years. She served as an instructor at Irvine 1 for more than 20 years and has contributed to select business development projects within the organization during her tenure.

With a strong focus on practical, real-world application, Terri specializes in empowering women through effective self-defense training. Her instruction emphasizes awareness, confidence, technical precision, and resilience — equipping students with the tools necessary to protect themselves while developing discipline and personal strength through martial arts.
